Before 1901, ranches and farms ruled in Texas. Oil fueled lamps, but no one suspected its wealth under the ground. Anthony Lucas then started a well at Spindletop Hill. Oil shot 150 feet in the air for nine days out of nowhere! That "gusher age" placed Texas in the limelight. Texaco and Gulf Oil companies started operations in the state.
