The Best Way to Keep Your Garbage Disposal Fresh and Clean

Why You Should Clean Your Garbage Disposal

What You Need

Fancy cleaners are not a requirement. You may already have these at home:

  • Ice cubes

  • Baking soda

  • Vinegar

  • Lemon or orange peels

  • Dish soap

  • An old toothbrush

These are helping to break down food, killing germs, and getting rid of bad odors.

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Before you begin, ensure that your garbage disposal is turned off. You don’t want it activating as you’re cleaning! For added safety, unplug it or turn off the breaker switch.

Step 2: Scrub the Rubber Flap

The rubber flap on top (the splash guard when I worked on this) is filthy. Get it out; scramble it with dish soap and a toothbrush. A lot of gunk hides there!

Step 3: Use Ice and Salt

Drop a handful of ice cubes and a spoonful of salt into the disposal. Turn it on and let it grind. The ice sharpens the blades, and the salt scrubs off the stuck-on food.

Step 4: Utilize baking soda and vinegar

Slowly pour ½ cup of baking soda into the disposal. Then add 1 cup of vinegar. It will fizz and bubble! That means it’s removing dirt and killing germs. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with hot water.

Step 5: Add some Citrus for Scent

Cut up the peels of lemons or oranges and drop them in; run the disposal with cold water. The citrus oils clean the blades and leave a lovely scent behind.

Step 6: Rinse with Dish Soap

Add a squirt of dish soap to the disposal and run hot water while turning it on. This removes any residual grease and dirt.

How Often Should You Clean It?

  • Daily: After each use, briefly run hot water.

  • Weekly: Run some baking soda and vinegar.

  • Monthly: Cleaning with ice, salt and citrus.

What NOT to Put in Your Garbage Disposal

Some can ruin your disposal or block your pipes. Never put these in:

  • Grease and oil (they solidify and create clogs)

  • Coffee grounds (they accumulate and clog pipes)

  • Eggshells (membrane clings to blades)

  • Pasta and rice (these expand and clog the drain)

  • Bones and fruit pits (they're too hard and can break the blades)
